Subject: Should we use WEB Based systems as opposed to n-Tier Forms applications
Summary:

Most of Link Products are Web Based and Tested using IE and Google Chrome. There are some systems that are maintained in a Forms Application for security reasons.

Two Applications that Link maintains on a Windows Forms Based Application are:

Link Point of Sales System - POS required fast data processing and scanning capabilities and therefore cannot be hosted on a web platform.

Payroll and Human Resource Management Systems:
Parts of the Payroll and HR Systems that need to be accessed by employees are web based and must be hosted using SSL for data security. These items are hosted on the ESS (Employee Self Serve) module and include functions like: Employee Profile, Leave Management, Time entry and approvals, viewing memos, training schedules, etc. These can be accessed using Internet explorer and there are strict guidelines to ensure data security.

Systems that require high level security cannot be accessed via internet explorer. You can however access these systems with industry standard remote access tools such as Citrix or Terminal Server which employ additional layers of security to prevent un-authorised access. These include Payroll processing, Bank file generation, Employee Pay Rate maintenance etc.

It has been our experience with many customers in Fiji and abroad that exposing critical areas of your systems to a web platform can have security issues. As the security on web platforms improves, we will port these critical areas into the web.
